smoking room

its been a little cold outside and its hard to relax with a cigar outside in the cold. my garage isnt insulated and often is colder than it is outside so im making preparations for my office.

the usual factors have to be considered. my wife doesnt smoke cigars and neither does my 5 year old son, and chances are pretty good that when we sell the house, the buyer will not request a room that smells like cigars so ...

i had bought one window fan at the local true value hardware store and it was not only a weak fan but it didnt quite fit. i have now purchased this fan. king air is a popular name in window fans so i am hoping for the best!

  1. I mold and cast resin in my basement. With the fumes from the curing resin and the fact that I airbrush acrylic paints and have to use talcum powder when casting....it made a bit of a mess where I worked in the basement (which is an unfinished basement to begin with,so no harm there). But the owner of the house wanted me to take over his work room downstairs. So with the room being smaller with less ventilation (12' x 15' and only 1 window) I bought a fan for the one window which helped alot, but I wanted something else since having an open window during the winter would make it a bit too cold to hang in there and that is the only room in the house that I allow smoking in now,(my wife smokes cigarettes and I smoke cigars). I went to Target and bought a Holmes brand air purifier for about $24.95. It works like a charm when the smoke builds up down there. I recommend getting one of them HIGHLY!

  2. update:

things did not go as planned.

when i opened the box the fan arrived in i was severely dissapointed. the first thing i noticed was the flimsy nature of the fan. the side panels extended, but they exposed slight gaps. the fan in total was not perfectly square being that the side panels were slighly smaller than the height of the fan itself. so i made a frame for the fan to fit nicely in the window - off to a bad start already.

so once taking the time to make the frame out of 2x4's, caulk, and tape (for temporary evaluation) i put this puppy in the window.

i figure my room is over 900 cubic feet (10x11 with 8ft cielings [approx]) and the fan is 700 cfm. i was going for the idea of eliminating smoke. if the smoke touches the walls you expose yourself to a problem so i wanted to smoke to go from the cigar to the fan and any smoke i blew i would blow right at the fan. sitting a foot blow the fan, 6 inches away (horizontally) from the fan, the smoke was not immediately drawn to the fan. this caused smoke to rise to the cieling and then when the smoke got around to it [the fan] the smoke would exit the room.

there was little to no air coming in the window (besides the natural air that comes in any window), my door was shut and a vacuum was created (and confirmed) air had only one way to go (besides up) and that was out. also the houses central fan was off.

to no fault of the seller of this product, this just did not do nearly a good enough job for me. the seller was actually very prompt and packaging was great.

i would [b:0c998cab28]not[/b:0c998cab28] recommend this fan unless you are willing to rely on other measures to ensure your room doesnt smell like cigars.

oh yea i had a big candle lit on the other side of the room to assist. now it is the morning after and the room smells of cigars, it smells good mind you, but it smells.

  3. Have you tried leaving your entry door to the room cracked a little? That should help with the flow of air exchange so the fan can pull more out of the room and not create a vacuum.

  4. an ozone generator is also good at destroying the smoke. You can make one pretty cheaply and easily if you don't want to spend alot of money on one. Take a mercury lamp (like the ones that are meant to go outside your house) break the outercasing of glass on the bulb. mount the light inside of a solid colored rubbermaid container. cut out a hole on one side of the container and fix a small fan in it so that it is blowing air out of the box. Punch a couple of holes opposite the fan so that the fan can pull air through the box. This contraption should destroy the odors from the smoke. Only run it while you are in the room since the light will get very hot. Ozone can also aggravate lung conditions such as asmtha and is not good for small children so don't run it all day either.

  6. csoanka makes a darn good smoke eater for approx 40.00 they are available at holts cigars online. In my house I use a small fan and smokers candles but to work you must crack the outside windows and also have the door to the room open a tad so that it will create a cross flow. I smoke in my home office and it doesnt smell like a zoo when I leave it. You can leave to fan and the candle going for a few mins after you stop smoking, believe it or not those 5.00 smokers candles do work.
