cA reviews

I bororrowed this from a guy on another board I thought it was pretty funny.

[quote:106951a5d6]Whether you?re a fan of Cigar Aficionado magazine or not, you have to admit that they?ve certainly done a lot to bolster the cigar industry. But in the last couple of years they?ve taken a lot of criticism for becoming a lifestyle mag that only "features" cigars. And, the one thing many people on these boards have vehemently criticized, is CA?s so-called blind ratings system. Oh, Marvin will defend it to the end that there are notes of caramelized banana peel in his Edmundo, but many of us find it just plain humorous. So what I?ve done is put together a collection of cigars that were actually rated in the last 3 issues of CA, along with my personal comments. I hope you enjoy?

Hoyo De Monterrey ? Churchill (Cuba): Oct 2005 ? 87 Rating
CA: It?s wheaty with bread dough notes and some chewy flavors.
TZ: I guess if I?m Wolfgang Puck this is cool, but it?s a god-damned cigar people. Maybe I should save my money and torch up a slice of Wonderbread tonight.

El Rico Habano ? Corona Suprema: Oct 2005 ? 88 Rating
CA: It has cereal and leather notes with a touch of apple on the palate.
TZ: I believe I also detected some dried papaya, 3 in 1 oil, pine nuts and a hint of bullshit.

La Flor Dominica ? Double Ligero Chisel: Oct 2005 ? 91 Rating
CA: A wedge-headed shape ? a dark and streaky wrapper.
TZ: Kind of like the ?MC Hammer? of cigardom.

Partagas Black Label ? Piramide: Oct 2005 ? 88 Rating
CA: It has lots of black cherry and French Roast Coffee flavor.
TZ: Not Columbian, special house blend or frapaccino, but ?French Roasted.? Alexahente and Juan Valdez are truly proud of you people?NOT.

Fonseca Vintage ? Churchill: Oct 2005 -? 85 Rating
CA: A blond cigar with some veins and a pleasant oily finish.
TZ: Reminds me of vintage porn star, Francois Papillon ? especially that oily finish. Anybody remember Francois? Now there?s a guy who loved his figurado smoked.

Davidoff ? 3000: Oct 2005
CA: A Veiny panatela that is a bit tart, with a nutty character and short finish.
TZ: Sounds to me like Al Goldstein, ?after? the gastric bypass surgery.

Padron Serie 1926 Maduro ? No. 9: Oct 2005 ? 91 Rating
CA: Rich and very cedary with charbroiled meat notes.
TZ: The only cigar that carries the Atkins label. At $18 a stick that better be filet mignon in the f-ing filler.

Cuban Crafters Cameroon ? Chairman: Dec 2005 ? 81 Rating
CA: A homely dented cigar with gray color. The draw is troublesome. It?s chewy with a dull wood flavor. Lacks depth.
TZ: Only Enron could have a Chairman this bad. Good thing Cuban Crafters has been shelling out 25 grand a pop for those full-page ads. Really does persuade the editors, don?t cha think?

Macanudo Vintage Cabinet Selection 1997 ? No 1: Dec 2005 ? 87 Rating
CA: The finish is mellow and peaty.
TZ: I always thought Peaty was the dog in the Little Rascals. Anyway? I looked up the definition on Dictionary.com, which read- ? ?Peaty: Partially carbonized vegetable matter, usually mosses, found in bogs and used as fertilizer and fuel.? I think the son of a bitch smoked a Chia Pet.

Avo Classic ? No. 3: Dec 2005 ? 86 Rating
CA: Hints of pencil lead and a touch of cocoa.
TZ: Usually their senses are a bit more acute, like ?Yellow Sanford, #2 pencil lead ensconced in fine Belgian cocoa.? Hey Gordon, I think your boys are slippin?.

Bahia Vintage ? Double Corona: Dec 2005 ? 84 Rating
CA: Homely in appearance, this cigar is acidic and slightly acrid with a disheveled look.
TZ: I believe they just described Marvin Shanken to a ?T?.

R&J Anniversario ? No. 2: Dec 2005 ? 85 Rating
CA: Some veins on this Belicoso which is woody, with a wisp of fruit and nuts.
TZ: Sounds like the perfect smoke when frolicking with Harvey Firestein and Nathan Lane. (Not that there?s anything wrong with that.) Which reminds me of a joke? What is a gay hockey referee?s favorite penalty?? Too many men on the ice, of course.

Avo XO ? Presto: Dec 2005 ? 87 Rating
CA: Veiny and wrinkled, this little cigar has dusty, earthy flavors and tastes better than it looks.
TZ: God, I hope so.

Perdomo Estate Sellecion ? Aristocrata: Feb 2006 ? 84 Rating
CA: The finish is short and sour, harking of youth.
TZ: I?m sure right about now Nick Perdomo is saying ?Hey Marvin, are you out of your harking mind??

Quintero ? Nacionales: Feb 2006 ? 81 Rating
CA: This pale and veiny cigar has a firm draw. It smacks of bread dough, green wood and paper.
TZ: Hey now? I?m a huge fan of ?green wood.? Order me up a case of these bad boys, will ya?

Deso ? Karma: Feb 2006 ? 81 Rating
CA: It?s woody with a touch of spruce, and a salty taste of the sea.
TZ: Here?s another one for you Village People fans?Woody with a salty taste, and a touch of ?Bruce? (Like I said, not that there?s anything wrong with that.)

Montecristo ? Tubos (Cuba): Feb 2006 ? 88 Rating
CA: This good looking cigar has heavy tobacco notes with a straightforward tobacco finish.
TZ: Well, whaddaya know folks, a cigar that actually tastes like f#&%ing tobacco and not Carmen Miranda's hat.

And that?s it from me. Until the April issue?see you then!

Smoking ban for Galveston eateries rejected

Smoking ban for Galveston eateries rejected

Ordinance would have banned smoking in bars

(2/24/06 - GALVESTON, TX) - Smoking will still be allowed in restaurants and bars after the Galveston City Council rejected a comprehensive smoking ban.
The council voted not to change the city's current smoking ordinance, which prohibits smoking in public buildings and city parks but allows restaurants to maintain smoking and non-smoking areas.

The proposed change would have banned smoking in restaurants, bars and other public places, such as bowling alleys, bingo halls and boxing arenas.

After nearly a year of discussion and two hours of debate on Thursday, the council rejected the change by a vote of 4-2 with one abstention.

Mayor Lyda Ann Thomas cited personal choice and the rights of business owners as reasons for her vote against the ban. "I can choose," Thomas said. "I don't go where there's smoking."

Backers of the smoking ban argued that secondhand smoke is harmful to nonsmokers and should be eliminated from bars and restaurants to protect customers and employees.

Dr. William Au, a professor of preventive medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch, said the smoking ban was a matter of health, not the rights of smokers or nonsmokers.

"It is an important decision and calls for leadership," he said.

Galveston restaurant owners rallied against the ban.

Steve Greenberg, a lobbyist for Landry's Restaurants Inc., said the company was opposed to the ban for its hotel restaurants and bars in Galveston.

Also opposed was Gus Taylor, who said at least 50 percent of customers at his bar, The Stork Club, are smokers.

"I can't survive without their business," he said.

Council members who supported the ban promised to revisit the issue. Council member Joe Jaworski said a stiffer ban is inevitable.

"It's the future folks; it's going to happen," he said.

New CA Tobacco Tax Initiative.

FYI from my local tobacco shop...

The Coalition for a Healthy California (CHC) is sponsoring an Initiative that would raise the California excise tax on Cigarettes from $.87 to $3.47 per pack. Due to Proposition 99, which made California the only state in the Union to link cigarette taxes to excise taxes on other tobacco products, the excise tax on tobacco and cigars will nearly triple. This means the cigar you are buying today for $6.50 at your local tobacconist could go as high as $11.50 at some stores. Pipe tobacco you are paying $1.00 an ounce for will be priced at about $2.70. The CHC claims this Initiative will raise $2.4 billion per year. It wont. People will break the law and buy tobacco products out of state, on Indian reservations or on the black market this Initiative will create. The Board of Equalization, even though it will receive a portion of this new tax for enforcement, is against the Initiative because it will not have the resources to enforce the taxes and the state will actually lose tax revenue. This Initiative has passed review by the Attorney General and now goes out to gather the needed signatures to be placed on the November ballet. This Initiative will be bad law. It will put people out of business and will promote crime.

Cigar Unraveling

Has this ever happened to you? You open your humidor to take out a
cigar to enjoy and you notice the wrapper starts to unravel. This
is a fairly common problem with cigars, though it does appear to
happen less with the better premium made cigars. There are really
two reasons why this occurs. The first is that the cigar has
become dry and the second is that it was just wrapped improperly at
the factory.

For the former, you need to ensure that you are storing your cigars
in a well maintained humidor. So many people throw their new
cigars in a humidor and start smoking them the next day. I like to
tell people to let them sit and age for a while, rotate your stock
and let the new ones age while you smoke the older ones. This
gives the wrappers a chance to humidify properly.

If indeed the cigar still starts to unwrap be sure to make a note
of which brands it is happening too. If a specific brand is
causing problems, it could be a bad production run and I would
suggest talking to your tobacco store to ask for some replacements.

If the wrapper unwraps at the lit end, then you can either let it
be, or remove the wrapper. If unwraping at the cut end occurs, try
to moisten it with your tounge.

Since the wrapper contains most of the flavor, really try your
hardest to ensure your wrapper stays where it belongs.

Cuban Cigars VS. Cuban Alt. Cigars

I have been hearing claims lately that some of the South American Cigars are better all around than the Cuban's. Is this just hype or is it a true fact? If it is fact what brand(s) beat the cubans? The reason I am asking is I don't want to flop down my hard earned money on a wanna be Cuban and have it turn out to be a pieace of crap.

Hoyo de Monterrey ? Excalibur Royal Sterling Fortis

Country of origin: Honduras
Wrapper: Honduran Claro

The Royal Sterling offers a flavorful twist to the traditional Nicaraguan, Honduran, and Dominican long-fillers utilized by Excalibur. Slightly peppery hints, lotta smoke, great flavor. I'm writing this at 5:30 am because of the impression this cigar has made on me. What a great morning cigar to go along with a strong cuppa coffee. ZMan sent this gar to me and I will be grateful to him for a long for introducing me to it. I haven't smoked an Excalibur yet that I didn't like. The Fortis size, (7.1 x 54), by no means weakened any effects of taste or enjoyment. I normally prefer a robusto or toro size but this Churchill size was plenty flavorful. I'd rate this cigar at 8.9.

Green Tasting Cigars

I just received some green tasting cigars from JR Cigars. I have put them in my humidor for ageing. How long do you age them for or is there something else I should do?

JR Alt. Cigars being shiped green?

I just bought a bundle of JR Alt Hoyo Double Coronas and they are green. I am aging them in my humidor to try and improve the flavor. Has anyone else received any green tasting cigars from JR Cigars lately? I hope this is an isolated oversite and don't become the norm because I like doing business with JR.

JR Alt. Hoyo Double Corona

This smoke was not the best I ever tasted. The draw, burn, and ash was good. The spice was medium/medium heavy with fairly good quantities of smoke. The biggest problem with this cigar was it was green. So much so that it took away from the smoking experience. I have them ageing in my humidor and hopefully by summer time these cigars will be a pleasure to smoke.

Refreshing a Bitter Cigar

This tip on refreshing a cigar comes to us from loyal patron Dan
Orvis.

If your cigar starts to get a bitter taste to it as you near the
end, or perhaps if it went out and you are relighting, tap the coal
end to clear as much ash as possible. Then take a butane torch and
hold the flame so it goes directly into the ash. Hold it there
until the entire ash becomes white hot (generally about 10 - 15
seconds). Then put the cigar into your mouth and put the flame a
short distance from the coal. Blow through the cigar fairly hard
(no, we're not trying to launch the white hot coal to the other
side of the room). When you start blowing you will create a
yellowish-orange flare. This color will change as you continue to
blow. When the flare goes to blue or clear, the cigar is ready to
smoke. There shouild be very little harshness . It should taste
GOOD!!

I am not sure the science behind this but it certainly works as I
have tried it myself and heard of it on several occassions.

Punch Dbl Maduro Rothschild

Punch Original: Dbl Maduro Rothschild

Size: 4.50 x 50

Wrapper:Ecuador Sumatran
Binder:Connecticut
Filler:DR/HON/NIC

Keeping in mind that I am still a relative newbie, this is without a doubt my favorite cigar! I got turned on to the Punch Dbl Maduro when I first started hanging out at the table at JR's in Paramus. Since that time my humi has never been without them!

The wrapper is a gorgeous dark brown/black and very oily,it has "delicious" written all over it. It's silky smooth, with no construction flaws whatsoever.Perfectly packed and inviting.

The ash is firm, light gray in color and averages 1 inch plus in length before I tap it off.The burn is perfect with no need for a relight. The draw is smooth, cool and perfect every time with loads of aromatic smoke.

But the taste.....Is amazing! The 1st half of the cigar is smooth as silk on the palate with a nice blend of creamy rich coffee and a faint mild sweetness that you feel on the back and rear sides of the tongue.Around the halfway point the tip of the tongue begins to get a little tickle of spice that lets you know better things are about to commence. The last half of the cigar is when the spice begins to kick in. A nice peppery flavor begins to coat your tongue in just the right increments of flavor. As the spice begins to grow, so do the oils on the wrapper and you start to dread the fact that the end is near. The finish is long, pleasant and refreshing. This stick lasts roughly 1 hour.

To me, these cigars are like putting on my favorite pair of comfortable jeans and sneakers. The cigar just feels right in my hand, like it was meant to be. A perfect match! I know that the rating system here uses a 100 point criteria, but that's not enough! I rate this cigar a 125! It exceeds all the criteria and there should be another addition made, that being consistency! I have smoked well over 100 of these and have not been disappointed in a single one!

I know some will say that buying the Consuegra #9 is the same and cheaper. While I'll agree about them being cheaper, they are far from the same. Nothing against the Connie 9, I have 4 bundles aging in one of my humi's right now and they ARE my everyday smoke, But the Punch is something special. I buy them online and they end up costing me about $2.25 a stick compared to the $1.20 a stick for the Connies. At $2.25 online or even the $4.25 buying them in a store, it's hard to beat the perfection of the Punch Dbl Maduro Rothschild IMHO.

Puros Indios - Maxima Reserva - Media Corona Maduro

Country of Origin: Honduras
Wrapper: Sun Grown Sumatra
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan, Brazilian, Dominican
Strength: Full Bodied

The Reserva Maxima is a higher-octane version of the classic Puros Indios line. It uses an Ecuadorian-Sumatra wrapper leaf.
Cigar Size: 5.5" x 44 ring.

One of the characteristics I've noticed about the cigars that Rolando Reyes, Sr. has rolled is that they ain't all that pretty. At least not cosmetically. What I mean is that he doesn't roll cigars so that they look smooth and pretty to the woman you're with or that they'll be visually acceptable at the golf clubhouse refreshment emporium. Rolando rolls cigars that taste and smoke great for the guys that love cigars that taste and smoke great.

The Reserva Maxima is that kind of cigar. The Ecu/Sum wrapper has a few veins in it and even appears to be "warty". Yeah, I said warty. But man, from the time you light this cigar up until the time you throw it down to keep from burning your finger and thumb, you're in for a treat. Long burning, SPICY, and full-flavored from the get-go. I strongly urge you guys to try this cigar out. I rate it at a 9.2.

San Cristobal El Principe

San Cristobal de Habana: El Principe

Size:4 1/3 x 42

Smoked 2 out of a box dated Sept 05. Beautiful little stick. Well rolled, beautiful dark (Colorado?) wrapper. The 1st stick I smoked I couldn't kick back and enjoy it since I was in a poker tournament, had a chance tonite to do just that.

Copious amounts of smoke for such a small stick.Solid dark gray ash although it looked flakey, it held very well. The wrapper is just begining to show a oily complexion. Unfortunately it tasted a little green to me. Being that this is a young box I won't go back to it for at least 6 months. I'm sure with some age under it's belt this will be a true gem!

If you can find a box with a few years on it already, I wouldn't hesitate to buy it.Otherwise be prepared to let them sit for awhile. You'll be glad you did.

New Galveston TX cigar shop

The Galveston Daily News reports ...

Galveston entrepreneur Charles Head has opened the Hava-Cigar shop at 415 21st St. next to Club 21. Head also owns the Island Barber & Stylist shop on 45th Street. Head bought the business from James Warnell, who had operated the Hava-Cigar location in the Balinese Room pier.

The new shop features a ventilated lounge area where patrons can light up and listen to music or access the Internet with free wireless hookup.

Dry Stat Humidifier

Has anyone used the Dry Stat Humidifing tube(s) currently being sold on the JR web site? According to the ad its a tube type humidifier that fites into a box of cigars and is suppose to keep them in good shape (I have been taken one too many times to just lay down my hard earned cash on just any gismo or gadgit).

Camacho Cigar

This is a good med.-full bodied cigar with lots of thick smoke from begining to end. It had a light colored wrapper with medium-heavy spice and a nice even burn. The cigar held together right down to the nub. Keep trhe spice but add the flavor of a Maduro Wrapper and this would be a killer cigar. I recommend this cigar for all the smokers that enjoy med.-heavy spice. Tac Hammer it is a little on the weak side for your full spice taste but on the other hand it would make you a good afternoon smoke. I bought two of these cigars at a tobacco shop for 6 bucks a stick. this price is a little more than I will pay normally for my cigars but it was worth trying. I rate these cigars an 8.5 for taste and quality. and a 4 for value.

Camacho - Jericho

Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Size: 6 x 52- Toro
Wrapper: Nicaragua
Binder : Nicaragua
Filler: Honduras, Nicaragua
Full Bodied/Full Strength

Jericho cigars are made for Camacho by Tabacos Puros de Nicaragua, S.A. The same company that makes the excellent Joya de Nicaragua smokes. I am still trying to find more information on these smokes as far as exact wrapper etc. but I wanted to get this review up as I think this is a sleeper of a smoke. I have smoked the Toro, Churchill and Torpedo of this line and the Toros are very good, the Churchills are lousy and the Torpedos are excellent. The wrapper is a rich tasting natural that may be sungrown, is slightly spicy and toothy. The Torp has good flavor from the time you light it up to end. I have been able to get boxes of the torps consistently in the area of $30 dollars on cbid and this is a well constructed, excellent smoke. Stay away from the churchills as the blend suffered in this shape for some reason. The Toros have real good flavor but at these prices I would buy the Torpedo every time. I would give this smoke an 8.2 on the Fletchman scale.

[img:2ff5c36417]http://www.cigarzilla.net/images/CamachoJericho1.jpg[/img:2ff5c36417]

Please note: since this review was submitted this cigar has been reblended and production has been taken over completely by Camacho - The new blend in my opinion is superior.
