Punch Gran Cru Reserva- Robusto Maduro
by Fletchman on Mon Sep 08, 2008 6:54 pm
avatar_picture
Country of Origin: Honduras
Size: 5.25 x 50
Wrapper: USA - Connecticut Broadleaf - Maduro
Binder: Ecuador grown Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: DomRep/Honduras/Nicaraguan
Medium/Full

The Gran Cru is a more refined version of the Punch line. The dark brown wrapper is oily and silky. Construction is excellent and consistent; firm with no soft spots. The burn was sharp with a firm salt & pepper ash. I hadn't tried these cigars for a long time as the regular Punch Rothschild Maduro is a favorite. However I was very impressed with how smooth this cigar was. The flavor was rich and complex but mellow at the same time. One of the smoothest Honduran smokes I have had the pleasure to enjoy and a cigar that will please the real aficionado or blow away the beginner.

SANCHO PANZA - EXTRA FUERTE - CADIZ
by Fletchman on Sun Aug 17, 2008 12:34 pm
avatar_picture
Country of origin: Honduras
Size: 6.125 x 54 belicoso
Wrapper: habano - Honduras
Binder: Honduras
Filler: Honduran- Nicaraguan
medium/full

A very enjoyable smoke with a rich spicy backbone. The wrapper is a dark red, slightly toothy. Draw and burn is excellent as with most of General Cigars products. On light up the there is a nice bit of spice with a hint of cedar. The flavor builds slightly but stays in the medium range right on the edge of full. I have read where some think this cigar is for the seasoned smoker but I have gifted them to newbies who have enjoyed them immensly. They seem to have more flavor than strength if that makes any sense. I usually smoke them up when I get them so I am not sure how they age. Price wise the belicoso retails for about $58 and the other sizes under $50 a box. I would suggest tyring a 5er before buying a box just to make sure the taste agrees with your palate. If not then package the rest of them up and send them to me.

Carlos Toraño-Exodus 1959 Robusto

Cigar Stats
Brand Owner: C.A.T. Tobacco, Miami, FL
Tabacalera: Toraño - Danli, Honduras
Model/Vitola: Carlos Toraño - Exodus 1959 Robusto
Size: 5.0 x 52 (box-pressed)
Wrapper: Honduras Habano (H2000)
Binder: Honduras
Filler: Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Honduras, Mexico, Nicaragua
Cigar Insider Rating: 90 (2006)

Other vitola sizes available
6.5 x 54 - Torpedo
6.0 x 50 - Toro
5.75 x 50 - Perfecto
7.0 x 50 - Double Corona
All sizes are packed in dark lacquered cedar boxes of 24 with no individual cellophane sleeves. The unique box is a tri-level with lift-out trays ... a very handsome presentation.

The Toraño family

The Toraño family history in tobacco dates back to 1916 in Cuba when Don Santiago Toraño entered the cigar business. By the late 1950's when Fidel Castro's government came to power, the Toraño family was a powerhouse in the Cuban tobacco industry, operating 17 farms and brokering tobacco sales. In 1959 it all came to an end when Castro nationalized the industry, seizing all assets of tobacco families.

Carlos Toraño Sr. left Cuba, taking his passion for tobacco to the Dominican Republic. Even today, growers in the Dominican Republic credit him with introducing the Cuban seed to the Dominican Republic and teaching the farmers there how to grow what is today known as Piloto Cubano. When Carlos Sr. died, the family business was passed to Carlos Jr. and expanded to growing in Nicaragua, Mexico and Ecuador.

Today, after overcoming numerous challenges following flight from Cuba, the Toraño family is the only major cigar manufacturer to operate factories in each of the three leading cigar export countries; Honduras, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic.

Carlos Toraño-Exodus 1959

The Exodus 1959 was introduced in 2001, as a tribute to expatriate Cuban tobacco farmers and cigar makers, who fled Castro’s regime. The line has achieved numerous industry accolades including a 90 Cigar Insider rating for the Robusto in July 2006 and placement as 5th best in the world by Cigar Aficionado for 2006! Smoke magazine rated the Robusto a 4.5 out of 5 back in October of 2002. At the time, one of their highest ratings ever.

Bottom line up front .....

Before I launch into my review I should say thanks to lanshark for providing the sample for this review. It made for a fine afternoon smoke for which I am most gracious.

The CTE 1959 is a decent mid-day medium strength cigar but not a competitor to my favorite smokes. I would certainly put it above yard gar status but not on my regular buy list. The diverse blend creates a rich flavor profile and aroma which is interesting. Although this is stronger than most Toraño fare, I am just partial to stronger cigars.

Pre-light

Wrapped in the “controversial” H2000 leaf and sporting impeccable box-pressed construction, this cigar is pleasing to behold. The very dark, almost maduro looking wrapper has great oils and is quite smooth with very few small veins. H2000 was used widely during the cigar boom in the late 1990’s, where it was often criticized as flame proof and compared at times to asbestos.

H2000 (aka Habana 2000 or now Habano) was originally developed in Cuba as an alternative to the corojo and criollo strains which were very susceptible to various kinds of blight. Agronomists crossed “true” corojo, the trademark wrapper leaf developed by Diego Rodriguez in the 30’s, with Bell 61-10, a type of cigarette tobacco. The new strain resulted in a thick leaf that was indeed more disease and pest resistant, but cigar makers found it difficult to ferment and smokers almost universally complained that it burned badly, sometimes resulting in the binder and filler burning completely and leaving a hollow shell of H2000 wrapper. I don't know about you but I hated when that happened!

Since that time it appears that either the strain has been improved, or processing methods have been developed to persuade the petulant H2000 wrapper leaf to burn properly. But I digress .....

Pre-light aroma is of rich tobacco with a very slight ammonia edge. Leaves the nose tingling. Following a clean clip the draw was very nice. I read some complaints about loose draw but that was not the case with my sample. Lights up very quickly.

The Smoking Experience

First pulls yield a peppery blast but quickly warm to a smooth earthy cocoa and leather flavor with some notes of sweet creamed coffee. The aroma is very pleasant along with a hint sweet coffee on the finish. Burn was very slow and cool with moderate smoke volume in the first third building to clouds the rest of the way. Smoke time was about 70 minutes. The burn line went erratic on me a couple of times requiring torch assistance. Ash was medium gray with some dark gray mottled in and first ash held to the halfway mark. The second third had the nose get creamier with a little less "twang" and the flavor profile with a little more coffee in the mix. The last third ushers in slight pepper on the tongue and flavors darken and grow toasty. Finish was medium in length with some smooth cedary leather on the aftertaste.

My take .....

A medium-bodied, full flavored smoke which did not captivate me but certainly has an interesting flavor profile. Packaging and cigar appearance were fantastic. There is no doubt this is a good looking cigar. Given my affinity for full bodied smokes, I don't think I'll be looking for these but I definitely won't turn one down if offered!

Retail on the Robusto is around $5.80 US but they can be found easily for $3.00 with some sale prices even lower. A great value price for a quality medium-bodied smoke.

Like it ... It was OK
Buy it again ... not for me
Recommend it ... Yes, to those looking for medium body with interesting flavors

FAMOUS BUENOS NATURLAES & MADURITOS

avatar_picture

Country of Origin: Nicaragua
Shape/Size: 4 x 42 Petit Corona - Parejo
Wrapper: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Binder: Nicaragua
medium body/medium strength

Every once in a while I get surprised by an unheralded, unbanded cigar. A Famous Smoke shope exclusive made by Nestor Plesencia, these cigars were featured recently on "Cigarmonster" for $21.95 a box of 40. A buddy(Tachammer) purchased a box of each of the Naturales and Maduritos and was kind enough to send me a few of each to try. I wasn't expecting much, maybe a yardgar or something for a quick smoke while traveling that was slightly tolerable and better than a gas station smoke. Well, I was surprised enough to kick my self more than once for missing the sale. The naturals start off with a nice bit of spice and smooth out to a robust little cigar thats medium bodied with enough flavor and complexity to make you think you are smoking a more expensive brand. I have since put my money where my mouth is and have chased down a box of each at auction. Presented in cedar boxes of 40 even at the list price these are a deal. The maduros are every bit as good as the nats. Starting off with a blast of cocoa dust flavor on the light up they smooth out to a mellow rich vitola that is excellent for an after dinner smoke when you may not have time for a full sized cigar.
I have tried a lot of small cigars and normally they are lacking in flavor and complexity even when they have a big name band. These taste as if they were blended specificaly for a Petit corona size rather than a big cigar blend that has been paired down to a smaller size. Construction was very good with a nice cap, well filled and no soft spots. They probably won't make it to the top of anyones list but they are definitely worth a try and I plan on keeping some of each in my humidor.

The 1st Annual Georgia “Smoke On The Water” Herf

The 1st Annual Georgia “Smoke On The Water” Herf.

June 7, 2008.

8:00am to dusk.

Anyone and everyone is invited to attend.

This year’s event will be held at the Amity Recreation Area, on beautiful Clark’s Hill Lake near Augusta, GA. See the below links for info and directions. Once there, just look for the signs. If you’d like additional info, please e-mail me and I’ll help if I can.

http://www.sas.usace.army.mil/lakes/thurmond/dayuseinfo.htm#amityday

Bring your spouses, girlfriends, (or both - ), kids, friends….. All are welcome. This will be a family type get-together on a beautiful lake so also bring the swimsuits, boats, fishing rods, etc. There are hotels and campgrounds nearby so make it a weekender. You’ll have to make your own arrangements there however. Mealtime is eat whenever you get hungry and chose from whatever is available!

There are only a couple of rules for the event……

* As this is a cookout as well as a herf, all attendees must bring a food dish of some sort. Side items, entrees, utensils, whatever you want to bring, but bring enough for about 20 people. There will probably be more people attending but that’s a good amount to start with. If a grilled item, it can be cooked on site, but others will need to be precooked. Electricity and water will be available if needed.

* The picnic shelter costs $75 to rent for the day, so there will be a $10 fee for all attending. That’s a one-time $10 for yourself if alone or for you and the entire family. This $10 will repay the actual cost of the shelter and any additional funds raised will be added to the charity proceeds (see below).

* We will also be holding a Charity Auction during the event. Generous donations from many sponsors have been donated for this auction, with a complete listing available at the herf. Adults only may purchase auction tickets. With your $10 fee mentioned above, you will get 3 auction tickets, and will have the option to purchase more. $10 for each 3 additional tickets. All funds raised will be donated to an Augusta, GA chapter of the Golden Harvest Food Bank to assist folks less fortunate than ourselves. One thing to note about winning is that there will be “large” prizes as well as “small” prizes. What determines if an auction item is “large” or “small” is my sole discretion and will be announced at auction time with each item. With this being said, you can win multiple “small” items but only one “large” item. -----As for an example, you win a box of cigars. Then later you win another box of cigars. Ok, at this point you will have to decide if you want to keep the first win OR trade it in for the second win. If you decide to keep the first win the second item will be drawn for again. If you decide to trade in the first won item for the second win, the item traded in will be drawn for again for a new winner.----- If this is not fully understood, please let me know. Doing the auction in this way will help spread the wealth around for most. This also promotes a friendly auction setting.

***Important*** ..... If you are planning to attend, PLEASE e-mail me so I can be sure there are enough freebies for all (yes freebies). Also, please let me know what food or related items you’re bringing and how many guests will be with you. If you show up without giving me prior notice via e-mail, I can’t promise you any freebies, sorry. This is only fair for those that did let me know. Upon arrival there will be a sign-in sheet and name tags for everyone.

If you have any questions, feel free to e-mail me or PM me for my phone #.

Hope you can make it!!!!!!!

Olde World Reserve Robusto (Maduro) by Rocky Patel

Cigar Stats
Brand Owner: Rakesh Patel
Tabacalera: El Paraiso - Danli, Honduras
Model/Vitola: Olde World Reserve Robusto (Maduro)
Size: 5.5 x 54 (box-pressed)
Wrapper: Costa Rica (Maduro) — Nicaragua (Corojo)
Binder & Filler: Nicaragua (rumored a little India too)
Cigar Aficionado Rating: 88 — 2007 (I think this is way to low)

Other vitola sizes available
5.0 x 54 - Torpedo
6.5 x 52 - Toro
All sizes are offered in cedar chests of 50 with a choice of Corojo or Maduro wrapper

Rocky Patel ... the man

Rocky is a natural born salesman. He sold china and cutlery door-to-door in high school, participated in Junior Achievement, sold grapefruit by the case and raised money in college for muscular dystrophy research. He moved to Green Bay, Wisconsin, as a teenager, where he developed a lifelong love of the Packers to rival that of local born Cheeseheads. (In one proud moment he presented members of the team with his cigars.)

Patel, an entertainment and product liability lawyer turned cigar salesman, had a cigar-smoking girlfriend who “made him” join the Grand Havana Room in Beverly Hills. He went to his first cigar trade show in 1996 and was mobbed for business. This was the beginning of his strong relationship with the cigar industry as a major player.

Per a quote on his website, Rocky loves the quality of Padron, the construction of Davidoff, and the consistency of Fuentes. Patel wants to incorporate all of these admirable qualities into his cigars and make them affordable. His are definitely great cigars, so it would seem he is succeeding.

Old World Reserve

The Old World Reserve (”Master Blend 7XX” as it is designated on the box) was introduced at the 2005 RTDA in New Orleans, LA. That initial iteration, Rocky’s first attempt at the OWR, never made it out of New Orleans, and was ‘re-introduced’ at RTDA 2006 in Las Vegas, NV. This uniquely delicious and buttery smooth blend of tobaccos is actually quite mellow yet very deep in flavors. Olde World Reserve is Rocky Patel’s most expensive creation so you would certainly hope it has “the right stuff” and IMHO it definitely does. It is masterfully blended using top-quality tobaccos, extensive fermentation and aging processes, and the highest of quality control standards. Doesn’t matter if you are part of the Rocky Fan Club or not, you should give this cigar a try.

Bottom line up front …..

First off, a big THANKS to lanshark for gifting me this stick. Have to say smoking it really made my day! Very Happy

I am a big fan of full flavored cigars which is why I like many vitolas Rocky has to offer (Vintage, Sun Grown, Edge jump to mind). Seems crazy to say, but the Olde World Reserve is a cut above. All of Rocky’s magic is realized in this cigar. Overall, an exceptional example of blending that is extremely well-balanced and surprisingly smooth. Don’t let the hype descriptions of power and strength scare you off! Even if you are a mild to medium cigar buff, try this cigar. I think you will be very pleasantly surprised. The Olde World Reserve is an eventful smoke that fully satisfies the palate of even the most discriminating aficionados. A very rich smoking experience!

Pre-light

These sticks are gorgeous to look at. The band is sophisticated and the foot is sleeved in a gold speckled brown tissue paper with the “RP circle-o-dots” logo in gold at the center. The sleeve is easily removed revealing the dark mottled wrap, smooth and oily. In the sunlight, a slight rosado hue in the background color is evident.

The cap is a little ruddy looking but well constructed nonetheless. Tightly packed, the stick is firm to the touch but fairly light in the hand. The wrap has very subtle sweet tobacco scent and the foot, soft earthy wood. Clip was clean. Draw was perfect and tasted of strong southern sweet tea. As I toasted the foot the exquisite aroma wafted around my head and I began to salivate. It did take some effort with the torch to get this one lit but once there, no more external fire required.

The Smoking Experience

Right out of the gate, the flavor is spectacular with earthy wood and leather rolling over the palate and a tinge of sweetness on the nose. After a few pulls, a nice thick volume of cool smoke and in between puffs, beautiful curls of blue smoke from the foot. As the blend warms it settles to a creamy smooth base of toasted nuts, leather and wood with notes of sweet fruit on the nose (kind of raisiny). During the last third, an enjoyable espresso and bitter chocolate flavor develops and becomes more definitive toward the nub. Initially, the finish is nutty and rather short but evolves to a longer intense toasty espresso in the second half with a bit of pepper on the tongue. This cigar has an awesome aroma similar to “The Edge” but not quite as sharp and consistently sweet to the nub. Draw remained perfect from light to nub and the burn was clean.

The ash was medium gray and held on well. Curiously, the stack of quarters effect common to most cigar ashes was present but began to swirl. Unusual looking to say the least. I only ashed this cigar twice.

In terms of strength, the first half rests squarely in the medium column and then it begins to intensify. The last inch and a half are definitely full strength. I would say it carries a mild nicotine kick but definitely not overpowering. I suggest you do have something on your stomach for maximum enjoyment.

Long on smoking time, this gar took me 85 minutes to smoke. And time well spent I might add!

My take …..

I’ve tried a healthy share of both corojo and maduro wrapped OWR and come to the conclusion that, while both are good, I enjoy the maduro most. IMO it’s richer in flavor and offers a very nice sweetness from the wrapper leaf. The maduro is also very (very) smooth in character with an earthy backbone that’s deep and rich. Overall, this is a great cigar, one worthy of the highest of ratings from those who know cigars best.

The Robusto can usually be found for around $11 a stick. Expensive, but if you want the finer things in life you have to pay the price. Definitely a exquisite cigar. If I were you I would try at least one and then decide if wallet dipping is in order.

Initially released as a limited edition cigar, the Olde World Reserve was only available in traditional brick and mortar tobacco shops. That is no longer the case as they can be found online just about everywhere. It pays to shop around on this one. They are a challenge to find in stock but the hunt is well worth it!

CRUZ REAL - Conneticut
by tacHammer on Thu Apr 24, 2008 9:49 am
avatar_picture
Origin: Honduras
Size & Shape: 5 x 50 Parejo
Filler: Dom/Nic/Hon
Binder: ?
Wrapper: Connecticut

Cruz Real cigars are blended by Rocky Patel and Famous proprietor Arthur Zaretsky with long-aged Dominican and Nicaraguan longfillers rolled in your choice of U.S. Connecticut or savory dark Sumatra wrappers.

I'm typically not a fan of Connecticut wrappers and this cigar is a little weak to me for an after meal desert but it makes for a great morning cigar with coffee. The rich flavor really melds with java in a way that is hard to describe. The stick felt just a little soft up and down it's length but I never had any draw or burn issues. It burned evenly and supplied ample smoke with a firm gray ash.

I would definitely like more. Rocky and Arthur are to be commended.

Get's an 8 on the tac-o-meter.

Fletchman's Notes:
I was very impressed with this cigar. The longer I smoke cigars the more I am coming to appreciate delicate flavors and complexity. I found this cigar to be extremely smooth, creamy with hints of vanila, carmel and a slight nuttyness. A really fine smoke. I would think this cigar with a one of the lighter single malts would be outstanding. I found them to be mild in body but with lots of creamy smoke and alot of flavor. This is the second famous exclusive cigar I have tried in the last few months. The Conuco was outstanding and although this cigar is a totally different blend it is equally as good. Burn was sharp and draw was excellent.

EL CREDITO - ARTESANO DE MIAMI

Country of Origin: UNITED STATES - Miami
Sizes 49 x 6 7/8
54 x 6
52 x 5 ¼
46 x 5
58 x 5 ½ Campana
Wrapper Nicaraguan Habano
Binder Ecuadorian Sumatra
Filler 75 % Nicaragua 25% Dominican Republic.

I received the 5 unbanded cigars Courtesy of Ernesto Perez Carrillo after he joined us for our Thursday night chat. Everyone who showed up for the chat was gifted a 5er of this new cigar in various shapes and asked to give their feed back. To say that I was thrilled would be an understatement, "Ernie" has been my favorite cigar maker ever since Tachammer sent me my first El Rico Habano Club several years ago.

I firmly believe in letting cigars sit for at least a week and preferrably a month in the humidor after they have arrived. The difference in flavor profile and burn can be dramatic. However since time was a factor and we have been asked to give our feedback I waited only a few days before I gladly started smoking away.

Appearance and construction were first rate. The wrapper was a beautiful chestnut brown with a few small veins. It had the smooth appearance of a connecticut wrapper but a darker color with a slightly reddish hue. The Parejos had a very nice cap as did the tip of the pyramid. All were well filled with some heft, no soft spots and well made as all of Ernies cigars.

The flavor started out with a mild spiciness that began to build to a rich taste that was slightly sweet with but subtle complexity. Hints of several different flavors; cocoa, cedar and vanila were apparent but alot of real straight forward tobacco flavor was there as well. The cigars tasted fresh but not young. The tobaccos seemed perfectly aged as there was not a hint of harshness. I was very impressed by the smoothness. It's an excellent cigar and I am looking forward to having a stash of these in my "special" section. As I said earlier I believe giving a cigar some time to settle before smoking. These cigars were outstanding with very little settling time and with a few months time in the humidor the rich and varied flavors will meld together into an incredible cigar. I have 2 left of the 5 pack and am going through a personal wrestling match of whether to say to hell with it and enjoy them now or bury them in the bottom of the humidor and smoke them in a year. Either way it's a gold plated problem.

Ernesto Carrillo from El Credito at the cigarzilla.net chat
by LanShark on Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:50 pm
avatar_picture
During Ernesto's first chat with cigarzilla.net he brought with him a nice surprise for those in attendance along with his wealth of information, interesting stories, and personality.

He was excited to tell us about new products on the horizon;
First off the new Artesanaos de Miami that are exclusively made in Little Havana Miami. Ernesto stated that the Miami are unique because they use a different bunching technique than the Dominican Republic (DR). “They bunch the DR cigars with the Lieberman and with the Miami it's all hand bunched so the draw and positioning of the tobacco is going to influence the taste.” Ernesto continued to tell how they are producing a new La Gloria Cubana (LGC) in Miami which will be out by May or June “it's a blend of tobaccos I use in the Serie R, El Rico Habano, and the La Gloria Cubana with a Habano Nicaraguan wrapper". Another project in the works is for a “40 year anniversary cigar which I'll start working on in another month, very old Nicaraguan tobacco with a possible Ecuadorian conn wrapper”. The cigar will probably be an El Credito because the factory has been in Miami 40 years and will probably come in boxes of 40 cigars and they will make approximately 100 boxes. The reason for the limited amount is that the tobacco is from 1997 and Ernesto only has 2 bales.

The topic of Nicaraguan politics arose and Ernesto stated that “Nicaragua seems to be okay for now. There is incredible growth in Esteli the tobacco city in Nicaragua”. He continued saying that he is going to start using more tobacco from Nicaragua in future projects. “For the new Artesanos I'm using about 80% Nicaraguan and 20% Dominican Republic”, while currently he is using about 35% DR in La Gloria Cubana, 90% in the El Rico Habano and the Serie R has approximately 50/50 Dominican Republic/Nicaragua Ligero. Talk then turned to wrappers as we inquired as to the difference between the Serie R EMS wrapper and the ERH. Ernesto stated that the wrapper for the Serie R and El Rico Habano are Sumatra but from different priming while the new Artesanaos wrapper is a Nicaragua Habano from Jalapa.

Cigar sizes were also a topic of discussion as wishes of a Serie R in carona size were brought up but Ernesto explained that a Serie R in a carona size wouldn't do justice to the blend due to the amount of ligero tobacco used, “ring gage and length is where the secret lies in where the blend is going to differentiate”. Ernesto continued with “blending is like art, you have to envision what it is you are trying to say, no doubt you have to love working with tobacco and being in the fields ... one thing I can tell you is that I'm never satisfied with any blend because I know there is a better one to be made and enjoyed by us cigar smokers”

When talk of ERH arose, Ernest stated that “the El Rico is starting to make a name for it self and I can tell you we are constantly back ordered. El Rrico Habano was taken off the market because during the boom there was not enough of the tobacco that I use for it - so I decided rather than put something out there that was not right decided not to make it.” The tobacco now comes from an Oliva farm in Ecuador.

On the topic of Cuba Ernesto stated that him and his family had a couple of farms in San Cristobal and San Juan Y Martinez along with the fact that while Cuba is “not open yet but when it does I'll be there”. He predicts that there will be some battles for brand names but in the USA most brands are secured.

Interesting facts about Ernesto Carrillo;
He is quite the busy man, making over seven million cigars a year and traveling approximately every other week to the Dominican Republic. We also found that from April 15th to the 18th he will be in NYC, CT, and NJ.
    Some of his own favorite cigars are the LGC White Box Wavell, ERH Gran Habanero Maduro, and Serie #5 with some of his other favorites including; Fuente Robusto in Conn, Siglo 6 Cohiba, Flor Dominicana 2000, Cohiba, Macanudo Gold Label, and Punch Maduros. He continued to say that there are lots of good smokes out there;
He feels that the maduros are a more consistent smoke but to him the EMS has more complexity but that he enjoys them both.
He smokes about 6 to 8 and one before bedtime on his back porch.
Ernie described his relationship with Daniel Nunez and how they get along great mainly because of the respect they have for each others work.
Factory tours are welcomed just call ahead to if he is in town if not just come on by
and ... "I don't play drums except at the RTDA party once a year"

It was a pleasure to have Ernesto with us for a chat and we hope to have him back soon. Don't forget Thursdays at 9 Eastern, only on cigarzilla.net!

Country of Origin: Dominican Republic
Size/shape: 5.25 x 54 Parejo
Wrapper: USA - Connecticut Medio Tempo
binder: Dom. Rep
filler: Nic./Dom. Rep
full bodied/full flavor

I tried this cigar after it first appeared on the market several years ago. The cigar tasted young and fairly one dimensional as if it was all strength and lacking complexity. I am glad I had the chance to revisit Partagas Black. The blend seems to have matured and although the strength has not faded, the flavor and complexity has vastly improved. The medio tempo wrapper is black and oily, the toasty flavor profile starts with strong notes of coffee/espresso with hints of dark chocolate and cocoa. Strength is full but not bitter. Definitely a cigar for the experienced smoker. I put a few away as I am sure they will age wonderfuly.
